Kaufmann is the Founding Director of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin, Germany, where he heads the Department of Immunology. He is a professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Charité University Clinics Berlin, Germany, and a Faculty Fellow of the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study at Texas A&M University.
